The largest underground mine in the world

 

The largest underground mine in the world, called El Teniente, is located in Chile, in the city of Rancagua, 80 kilometers south of Santiago de Chile, at the base of the Andes. It is a mine from which copper has been obtained for 115 years and in fabulous quantities.

Up to 450,000 tons of ore are mined per year. Long gone are those early years where miners worked pick and shovel transporting the ore with donkeys.

Now these functions are made by 350-ton trucks and a crusher 15 m high.

The owner of this mine is the state-owned company Codelco, which in turn is the largest copper producer in the world.

This mine at the foot of the Andes is about 2000 meters high and its galleries descend 400 meters towards The bowels of the Earth.
